Although International Nurses Day is globally commemorated on the 12th of May each year, Premier Service Medical Investments (PSMI) held its commemorative celebrations on the 15th of May 2026 at West End Hospital. Scheduling the event on this date allowed staff to come together in a meaningful way while ensuring the continued delivery of patient care and the smooth operation of hospital services.
The gathering served as a heartfelt tribute to the dedication, compassion, and invaluable contributions of PSMI nurses. It provided an important opportunity for colleagues and leadership to pause and recognize the tireless commitment of nursing professionals whose daily efforts strengthen healthcare delivery across the PSMI network and the wider community. Through this commemoration, PSMI proudly honored its nurses for their unwavering service, commitment to excellence, and the essential role they play in improving health outcomes and advancing quality patient care.
The event, hosted by the West End Hospital Services Manager – Matron, Taruodzera, brought together members of the nursing fraternity and other staff to reflect on the invaluable work performed by nurses every day. Celebrated annually across the globe, International Nurses Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the profound impact nurses have on healthcare delivery. This year’s international theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” resonated strongly with the PSMI nursing team and was anchored on the pillars of life‑saving impact, empowerment, and sustainability.
The gathering was attended by several members of staff from West End Hospital, Medical Clinics and Diagnostic services including the BPM team from PSMI head office. The Guest of Honor was Mrs. Victoria Muusha, Director of Nursing Services for PSMI. Also present were Dr. C. M. Shonhiwa, Head of Department at West End Hospital, affectionately known as “Dr West End”; Dr. C. Popotai, Head of Casualty; Mrs. A. Carlsson, Head of Optometry; Mrs. P. Mapuranga, Nursing Practice Manager; Ms. T. Jubani, Customer Experience Specialist; Ms. J. Gwangwadza, Marketing and Brand Specialist; and several other members of staff from the various departments within PSMI. Their presence reflected the collective appreciation for the unwavering commitment demonstrated by PSMI nurses, who tirelessly ensure that patients receive compassionate and professional care around the clock.
The celebration was marked by a warm and joyful atmosphere, filled with music, dance, inspiring speeches and heartfelt testimonies from nurses who shared their personal experiences in the profession. The occasion also served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the highest standards of nursing ethics, professionalism, and compassionate care.
One of the most moving highlights of the event was the Nurses’ Candle‑Lighting Ceremony, a longstanding nursing tradition that honors the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, famously known as “The Lady with the Lamp.” The ceremony symbolized several core values of the nursing profession. It represented the passing of the torch of knowledge, compassion, and responsibility from one generation of nurses to the next. The candlelight served as a powerful reminder of the profession’s dedication to patient care, empathy, and hope for those experiencing illness and hardship. Lighting individual candles from a shared flame reflected the unity and collective purpose of nurses, while the symbolic light honored Nightingale’s nightly rounds caring for wounded soldiers—an enduring beacon of compassion and service.
The ceremony concluded with the recitation of the Nightingale Pledge by all the nurses present, reaffirming their commitment to uphold the ethics, standards, and noble calling of the nursing profession.
Members of the visiting public at the hospital were also privileged to witness this auspicious and celebratory moment. As the nurses, led by Nursing Practice Manager Mrs. P. Mapuranga, marched in a dignified candlelit procession around the hospital entrance, the atmosphere was filled with applause and jubilant ululations from onlookers. Patients and visitors expressed their gratitude as the nurses passed by, creating a truly touching moment of appreciation that highlighted the deep respect and admiration the community holds for the PSMI nurses and the nursing profession in general.
In her address, Mrs. Victoria Muusha, Director of Nursing Services, expressed sincere gratitude to all PSMI nurses for their dedication and unwavering commitment to duty. She emphasized that nursing is not merely a profession but a calling, one that demands compassion, resilience, and steadfast service. Mrs. Muusha reminded the nursing staff of the Eight Cs of Nursing—Compassion, Competence, Confidence, Conscience, Commitment, Courage, Culture, and Communication—encouraging them to continue developing their skills, pursuing education, and maintaining a lifelong learning mindset in order to grow both professionally and personally.
On behalf of the PSMI Executive leadership and the entire organization, she commended the nurses for their resilience and dedication despite the challenges faced within the healthcare sector. She encouraged them to continue delivering care with integrity, excellence, accountability, respect, and focus on providing an outstanding service experience for every patient and colleague. Mrs. Muusha further reassured the nurses that their welfare and professional concerns remain a priority for PSMI leadership, who are committed to supporting their growth and improving their welfare in tandem with the continued development of the organization.
The event also featured a light‑hearted storytelling session during which nurses shared memorable experiences from their training and professional journeys across various disciplines. Laughter and camaraderie filled the room as these stories offered insight into both the challenges and the deeply rewarding moments encountered in the nursing profession. Above all, the testimonies shared reflected the passion and pride that the PSMI nurses have in the nursing profession and in serving their patients and communities.
Through their dedication and professionalism, the PSMI nursing team truly embody the organization’s mission of providing accessible, quality, and affordable integrated healthcare services across Zimbabwe.
The management and staff of West End Hospital are commended for spearheading this meaningful initiative that celebrated and honored the invaluable contribution of PSMI nurses. As an organization, Premier Service Medical Investments proudly recognizes and applauds the dedicated efforts of all its nursing professionals and healthcare teams. Their work remains the backbone of healthcare delivery. Their commitment to duty will continue to inspire all staff to continually strive to improve the quality of care and service, working each day toward improved patient‑centered healthcare to shape healthier communities across the nation.
